“Crushed it”, says Fat Amy. Yes, they did.
Pitch Perfect 2 comes in like a wrecking ball, paying musical homage to its predecessor but taking the story of the Barden Bellas to a whole new place.
I’m not going to lie, I was worried the sequel was going to be all about Beca and Jesse’s relationship, but no. This movie is all about the Barden Bellas and it’s about women being awesome. Awesome nerds, awesome singers and awesome friends.
Who runs the world? Girls
It’s perfectly pitched (see what I did there?) to both a comedy loving movie audience and choir geeks alike. The Starling party I watched with were thrilled with cameos from The Pentatonix and other international a cappella gods performing incredible arrangements and showing off the best of what the human voice can do.
But for me, the best thing about this movie isn’t the singing but what the singing does; it brings people together. Just like our choirs here at Starling Arts, the ‘Bellas - and all the groups featured in the film - are a family. A family sharing highs, lows and butt confidence (see video, with a spoiler warning...)
Watch it. Love it. Revel in Elizabeth Banks and John Michael Higgins’ hilarious commentary and then book yourself into a choir retreat.
