Our Founders
Anna Shields (she/her)
Co-Founder
Anna is a specialist in community music and creative wellbeing, dedicated to the belief that singing and musical theatre have the power to transform lives. Growing up in a musical family, Anna’s foundation was built in her grandmother’s community theatre company. Her early immersion in the arts was shaped by years of singing in choirs and performing in various ensembles. These experiences led Anna to earn a First Class degree in community theatre from the University of Winchester and an MA from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. In 2010, she co-founded Starling Arts, transforming her dedication to community music and theatre into a long-standing mission to get the world singing.
A respected voice in the industry, Anna shares her experience as a lecturer at the Guildford School of Acting (GSA) and the University of Winchester. She is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (AFHEA).
Her Impact at Starling Arts
Leading the Music: Anna musically directs all of our projects. She has a unique gift for bringing people from all walks of life together, transforming them into confident singers and storytellers.
Vocal Arranging: A prolific arranger, Anna’s vocal arrangements are a signature part of the Starling Arts sound and are performed by choirs internationally.
A Champion for Health: Anna is a specialist in Singing for Lung Health and a Mental Health First Aider, ensuring our sessions offer genuine physical and emotional support alongside the joy of singing.
Beyond Starling Arts, Anna serves on the boards of London Bubble Theatre and is the co-chair of Croydon Youth Theatre (CYTO). When she isn’t conducting or at the piano, she is usually found writing musicals with Emily (Garsin & Shields) or training for a marathon. Anna’s work is driven by a love for bringing people together through song. Using both group singing and musical theatre, she helps communities connect, collaborate, and find their voice.

Emily Garsin (she/her)
Co-Founder
Emily is a specialist in arts education and community wellbeing, dedicated to the idea that creativity belongs to everyone. Her journey began with Shine Inclusive Theatre in Sussex, where she first discovered the transformative joy of singing together. That early inspiration, seeing how music can unify and empower, became the foundation for her career.
Emily’s approach is rooted in both academic excellence and a genuine passion for the arts. A First-Class graduate of the University of Cambridge, where she was awarded the Bundy Scholarship and the Education Prize, she also holds a Master’s Degree with Distinction in Applied Theatre from the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama.
Throughout her career, she has designed and led projects that bring people together, working everywhere from the UK’s most prestigious cultural institutions to local community settings. Her work leading a refugee choir in North London reflects her core ethos: using music to build sanctuary, bring diverse communities together, and ensure everyone has a space to be heard. Her studies and her work have always focused on a single, vital goal: how drama and music can best serve society.
Her Impact at Starling Arts
Creative Vision: Since co-founding Starling Arts in 2010, Emily has helped move community singing from a personal passion to a widely recognised practice. She has led a vast range of projects, helping individuals find their confidence and teams find their rhythm.
Advocacy & Voice: Emily’s conviction that singing is a vital human need reached a global audience in her 2015 TEDx talk, Why the World Needs to Sing. It remains a source of inspiration for practitioners and singers worldwide.
Holistic Wellbeing: Emily brings a wide-reaching toolkit to her work. She is a highly trained specialist in Singing for Lung Health, a qualified singing teacher, a Mindfulness Meditation leader, and a Vocal Health First Aider.
Emily developed her craft at the heart of the UK's arts scene, notably producing major learning and training programmes for the English National Opera (ENO).
Whether she is writing new musicals as half of the songwriting duo Garsin & Shields or leading a community workshop, Emily’s work is defined by her professional expertise, her warm, friendly approach, and her belief in the life-changing power of the arts.
