3 Ways Singing Improves Your Mood

What would you say if you could improve your mood, simply by having a good sing? Here are just three of the benefits of singing, and ways to give them a try!

BENEFIT #1: It boosts happy hormones

Singing creates plenty of feel good responses, including endorphins, serotonin and immune system boosting antibodies, as well as reducing the stress responsive cortisol. Whilst distracting you from everyday worries and concerns, singing packs us with beneficial responses. Scientists struggle to find an activity that utilises more of our brain and we can’t think of a more fun and satisfying way to protect both our mind and body.

And the best part is you can do it from home and feel the same benefits! Our fortnightly Nest Choir sessions take place on Thursday evenings on Zoom and we welcome you to join us. You’ll reap the same rewards, regardless of your previous experience.

Taking part costs a suggested £5 with free places available for those not able to pay, and consists of a 50 minute singing workshop, including vocal and physical warm ups and song excerpts tailored for the Zoom room and to make you feel fantastic!

BENEFIT #2: It improves your physical health

We've all become accustomed to a more sedentary life in the last year, without the usual benefits of a stroll to the shops, cycle to work, or a gym class at the weekend. However, singing can step in to provide a range of physical benefits to keep your body in top shape. Singing is particularly beneficial for improving breathing, posture and muscle tension, and our unique style of teaching fuses simple movement with the music to get you moving without realising it. A healthy body leads to better sleep, healthier diet choices and a more focussed mind.

BENEFIT #3: It creates vital social connections

Many researchers in the field of positive psychology report that social connections are the biggest predictor of happiness. Singing is the perfect way to connect with a group and maintain a sense of cohesion even during a time of social distancing. Belonging to a group such as a choir is an important contributor towards our sense of interconnection.

We have developed our online singing sessions to create the best possible sense of social connectivity using the power of technology. While we may not be in the same room, we certainly encourage a sense of community and camaraderie that will keep us moving forward together.
