Introducing - Sing for Better Breathing!

We are really excited to be launching a new singing group for residents of the London Borough of Barnet who suffer with lung conditions and associated breathing challenges.

This approach to conditions such as asthma and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is part of our Sing for Better Breathing project, based on the innovative British Lung Foundation / Musical Breath training programme. The programme is based on findings from similar projects that singing has been shown to boost wellbeing, reduce social isolation, as well as reducing feelings of breathlessness and strengthening the voice.

The new Sing for Better Breathing group, which will be held online due to the Corona Virus pandemic, will be free of charge to residents of the Borough of Barnet, thanks to a generous grant from CommUNITY Barnet and The National Lottery Community Fund.

Absolutely no singing experience is needed and sessions will be interactive, fun and accessible. Each week will begin with engaging vocal and physical warm-ups to develop and strengthen breathing techniques before learning and singing some well-known songs.

Attendees of similar groups across the country report feeling happier, physically better and more in control of their breathing. Singing is proving to be an invaluable tool for those living with lung conditions and we’re excited to bring this brilliant opportunity to the London Borough of Barnet.

The sessions are being held online on Tuesday mornings from 18th May 2021 and the Starling Arts team are actively seeking more people to take part. The workshops can be attended by anyone living with lung conditions and/or experiencing breathlessness, for example from the effects of Covid-19. You can sign up here!
